When it comes to recognising “green furniture”, the assessment process is a complex one.

A truly sustainable furniture item must be verified against a very wide range of requirements, where deficiencies found must be addressed, and no single credential supersedes the need to satisfy all others.

For example, having a piece of furniture achieving an endorsement for indoor air quality, such as passing the well acknowledged GREENGUARD requirements, is certainly commendable, but this represents only one part of a much larger suite of benchmarks that should be satisfied to avoid washing our Australian market in only the palest shade of green.

Our industry can do better, and by supporting those schemes recognised under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Responsible Products program, such as the upcoming AFRDI 150 standard – expanded for both commercial and domestic furniture – you can play your role.
