Domestic Furniture Standards

This section presents a selected range of standards Furntech-AFRDI is currently either involved in the development of, or, involved in the process of the adoption/adaptation of as Australian Standards.

Every comment received will be seriously considered - your assistance is necessary to make these standards worthwhile and workable. The following standards are under consideration:

  • Development of a standard for beds and mattresses in three parts:
    • safety requirements (essentially strength and durability) DR 07398
    • mattress functional characteristics (hardness / firmness) DR 07405
    • resistance to ignition - based on BS 7177
  • Rated load standard for fixed height chairs (AFRDI 151)

  • New Standards Australia has completed the process of reviewing DR AS/NZS 2172 and has published the 2010 edition of AS/NZS 2172 Cots for household use - Safety requirements.
  • Standards Australia has completed the process of reviewing DR AS/NZS 4220 and has published the 2010 edition of AS/NZS 4220 Bunk beds and other elevated beds. Its media release can be found at http://www.standards.org.au/downloads/100416_Bunk_Beds_Standard_WEB.pdf
  • A new standard for stability of storage units for children has been released (AS/NZS 4935:2009) Domestic furniture - Freestanding chests of drawers, wardrobes and bookshelves/bookcases - Determination of stability
  • A new high chair standard has been released (AS 4684:2009) High Chairs - Safety Requirements
